For quite a long time my classic dual G5 Powermac stood around. I really fancy the design of the aluminum housing and Apple’s OSX. Although the G5 is still quite powerful there is only very limited software still available. I kept running it with the latest OSX for PPC until about three years ago. Ever since then I retired the Powermac but could not stand the idea of disposing it. So for three years and three moves I took it along. After all, the design and the quality literally yells after a resurrection – perhaps as a server.
Ubuntu is a rock solid OS that served my well over the last years for normal PCs. I figured that an Ubuntu PPC Server would be a reasonable choice for the G5’s second life. The installation of Ubuntu PPC went very smooth. The installation of Nginx, PHP, MySQL and WordPress was as easy as on a regular PC. Absolutely no difference at all. Next to come are some more servers, such as printer, samba, cloud and a couple of more doohickies a server is good for…
So here it is… This Site is provided by my Apple Dual G5 PowerMac running Ubuntu PPC 14.04.
Well, I figured that the power consumption is very very high for the G5 compared to more modern PCs and although I really fancy my G5 as a multi-purpose server I decided not to invest too much money in my local power-company. That is why I took it off-line today (22.01.2016). But is was a nice experience after all for me to get Ubuntu PPC 14.04.3 running on Apple hardware… 🙁
